David Maddison, P.Eng.
President and CEO
David is President, CEO and founder of Black Swan Energy. Prior to Black Swan Energy, he spent 30 years with Talisman Energy, most recently as Senior VP, Technology and Business Development.
His career has included management of multi-disciplinary teams in the Western Canadian basin, including Business Units of up 110,000 boepd, annual capital budgets of more than $1B, and an internal midstream business of more than 800 mmcf/d. David is a professional engineer, having graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Chemical Engineering. He has served on numerous industry committees.
James W. Buckee was born in Winchester, England in 1946. He is married and has four daughters. In 1967 he received his BSc Honours in Physics from the University of Western Australia. In 1970 he received his PhD in Astrophysics at Oxford University.
From 1971 to 1977 he held various petroleum engineering positions with Shell International and Burma Oil. In 1987, Dr. Buckee became Operations Manager for BP in Norway. Following this he became Vice President, Development Programmes for BP Alaska. In May 1989 he returned to England as Manager, Planning for BP Exploration. In September 1991 he was appointed President and Chief Operating Officer for BP Canada Inc. and in May 1993 was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Talisman Energy Inc. (formerly BP Canada). In October 2007 Dr. Buckee retired.
CPP Investment Board
Robert Mellema has been with the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) since 2008 and focuses on Natural Resources investments. Prior to joining CPPIB, Mr. Mellema worked at UBS on the Canadian Mergers & Acquisitions team in Toronto and the Leisure sector team in London. He also previously worked at the Boston Consulting Group in Toronto. Mr. Mellema serves as a Director on the board of Livingston International Inc. and has previously been involved in CPPIB’s investments in Teine Energy Ltd and Seven Generations Energy Ltd. Mr. Mellema holds a MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Queen’s University.
David B. Krieger has been with Warburg Pincus since 2000 and focuses on energy investments. Prior to joining Warburg Pincus, Mr. Krieger worked at McKinsey & Company in Atlanta and Europe.
He is a director of Black Swan Energy, Canbriam Energy, Ceres Inc., Endurance Energy, First Green Partners, Kosmos Energy, MEG Energy, Osum Oil Sands and Velvet Energy. Mr. Krieger also serves as a Trustee of the Kaufman Center for the Performing Arts. He received a B.S. in economics from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, an M.S. from the Georgia Institute of Technology and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.
Roy I. Ben-Dor joined Warburg Pincus in 2011 and is based in New York. Previously, Mr. Ben-Dor worked at McKinsey & Company in New York.
He is a director of Black Swan Energy and MainSail Energy, and works with MEG Energy Corp, Navitas Midstream Partners, Osum Oil Sands and Zenith Energy. Mr. Ben-Dor received a B.A. cum laude in psychology and economics with Distinction from Duke University, a J.D. magna cum laude from Harvard Law School and an M.B.A. with High Distinction (“Baker Scholar”) from Harvard Business School.
Azimuth Capital Management (formerly KERN Partners)
Jim Nieuwenburg has been a General Partner of Azimuth Capital Management (formerly KERN Partners), a leading energy private equity firm located in Calgary, since October 2008. He is a professional engineer by training.
Mr. Nieuwenburg has had 31 years of diverse experience including senior technical, business development and executive management roles. He was active as a corporate director and a private independent businessman from 2001 to 2008. He was formerly the President and CEO of Petromet Resources Limited (TSX) from 1998 to 2001. Until 1998 he served as Vice President, Asset Management of Norcen Energy Resources Limited (TSX). Prior to 1997, he held roles of increasing responsibility over 17 years with the Amoco organization, serving most recently as General Manager, Business Development for Amoco Energy Group, North America. He recently served as Chairman for Capitol Energy Resources Ltd (TSX) and C1 Energy Ltd (TSX). Mr. Nieuwenburg currently serves as a Director on the boards of Fairborne Energy Ltd (TSX) and Legacy Oil + Gas Inc. He also acts as a Director of several private companies in the energy business.
Azimuth Capital Management (formerly KERN Partners)
Dave Pearce is an Industry Partner with Azimuth Capital Management (formerly KERN Partners). During his 34 years in the energy sector, Mr. Pearce has worked in a variety of technical and executive roles in Exploration, Production and Corporate Development as well as an Independent Director in Canada and internationally.
Most recently, Mr. Pearce was President and CEO of Northrock Resources which was an intermediate Canadian E&P company producing 35,000 boe/d. He has also served as a Governor of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP)and chaired the Northern Canada Executive Policy Group. Currently, Mr. Pearce is a Director of TimberRock Energy, Black Swan Energy, Altex Energy Ltd., UK based Fairfield Energy and Raging River Exploration.
Jackie Sheppard (Lead Director)
Jackie Sheppard was the Executive Vice-President, Corporate and Legal and Corporate Secretary for Talisman Energy Inc. She served as Secretary to the Board responsible for Corporate Projects and Acquisitions, Communications and Investor Relations.
Ms. Sheppard has extensive experience in strategy and equity markets.
Evan Hazell has been involved in the global oil and gas industry for over 30 years, both as a petroleum engineer and as an investment banker. At present, he serves as a Director of non-profit and community organizations Opera America, Calgary Municipal Land Corporation and Calgary YMCA. From 1998 to 2011, Mr. Hazell acted as a managing director at several financial institutions including HSBC Global Investment Bank and RBC Capital Markets. Mr. Hazell holds a Bachelor of Applied Science degree from Queen’s University, a Master of Engineering degree from the University of Calgary, and an MBA degree from the University of Michigan.
